In a water damage claim, rapid response is critical. Most insurance policies require property owners to take necessary steps to prevent the damage from spreading. There are at least four progressive stages of indoor water damage.

Water migrates into areas not originally affected by the original water intrusion. Water will spread laterally into adjoining rooms, penetrates material below and wicks up into porous materials above.

Saturated materials begin swelling as they absorb moisture. In many situations drying and restoration procedures, if started soon enough, will restore them to their original condition. It takes an experienced water damage specialist to find all the areas where water may have migrated to and prevent future hidden damage. As water evaporates in a building it causes abnormal humidity conditions which can contribute to rapid mold growth. High humidity conditions need to be reduced quickly. After water intrusion, mold spores can germinate and multiply rapidly. Given acceptable growth conditions, one organism can multiply to more than one billion organisms in 24 hours.
